Understanding Asian Handicap Starts Here

Asian Handicap betting or Asian Line betting sounds complicated but it simply requires a logical explanation to get the concept across to sports betting enthusiasts who have been betting on football markets with traditional odds.

Asian Handicap betting is the most popular way of betting on football matches in the Far East and Asia as it gives the punter a 50% chance of winning a bet which is better than the 33% chance a punter has when betting with traditional multiples of 1 X 2 odds because the draw result has been eliminated in AH betting.

When a person bets on a team to win and there is draw result, the wager is lost in traditional betting but it cannot happen in Asian Handicap betting.

The bookmaker offering AH betting aims to create a handicap or a ‘line’ which gives each team a chance of winning that is as close to 50% as is possible.

In order to get as close to that 50% target, the bookmaker will use fractions of a goal if needed to match the teams as evenly as possible making the value of the handicap a kind of predictor of the final score of the match. The bookmaker’s payouts will be as close to ‘even money’ as possible at around 1.9 or 2.0.

A Fairer Way of Betting

Asian handicap betting gives the punter an increased possibility of winning a bet by handicapping the ‘better’ of the two teams making it a more even match. It’s a bit like tying your hand behind your back when you are playing a game with a less able competitor.

It increases the interest in betting on a match where the outcome is predictable. Who wants to bet on a team who is so much weaker than the opposing team that only a ‘miracle’ would see them win! With Asian Handicap betting the possibility of winning your stake is massively increased and the use of fractions of goals to handicap the teams leads to ‘split bets’ where the punter can win a part of the bet or get a partial refund.

The use of whole goal handicap values can lead to a push which is where the teams draw causing a null and void result with money returned to all the bettors. For this reason, bookmakers prefer to use values which involve whole numbers and fractions of numbers making the betting far more interesting and potentially more rewarding for both sides of the bet.

What Form Does the Handicap Take?

The handicap values are fractions of goals or whole goals added on to the possible result of the ‘underdog’ or deducted from the end result of the favourite team. It is not possible to add on to one team AND subtract from the other team at the same time.

The handicap values are: 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75, 2, 2.25, 2.5, 2.75, 3.0 The selected value is placed in front of the ‘favourite’ to win with a minus sign preceding the number. This indicates the number of handicap goals that will be deducted from the total number of goals scored by that team during the match.

Alternatively, the same value will be placed in front on the ‘underdog’ team with a plus sign in front of the value showing the amount of goals that will be added to those scored by the underdog to give the result for settling the Asian Handicap bet.

If the underdog does not score any goals, the final team result will be the value of the handicap awarded to them before the match. It can be a 0.25 fraction of a goal or as much as 3.0 goals depending on what was indicated before the match started.

Whole Handicaps

When a match has a 0:0 handicap it simply means that you can bet on the winning team as no handicap has been attributed. Any whole number handicap placed on a team gives the weaker team an advantage of that number of goals.

If Reading has a +1 handicap playing against Swansea, then Swansea will need to score two goals to win the match as Reading already has a goal given to them in advance. If the result is 1-1 the punter gets his stake returned.

Fractional Handicaps

To eliminate the possibility of a draw result, fractional handicaps are used as parts of a goal cannot be scored. Swansea is handicapped at 1.5 and Reading at 0.

Swansea needs to win by at least 2 goals so the result must be at least 2-0 to Swansea or 4-2 to Swansea for the punter to win his stake on Swansea.

Split Asian Handicap

This can be the most confusing type of Asian Handicap bet. When a bookmaker shows two handicap values for one team only a half goal apart or a quarter handicap value for that team then it is referred to as a ‘Split Asian’.

If Reading FC has +1.5, +2.0 next to it, this signifies that half of the wager goes on the 1.5 and the other half on the 2.0. For the punter to win both parts of the split bet, Reading must lose by one goal or less, draw or win the match.

If Reading loses by 2 goals, the 1.5 part of the bet is lost to the punter but the 2.0 part of the split bet leads to a push and your money back on that part of the bet only. The reason is that losing by 2 goals is balanced out by the 2.0 handicap value which brings it to a zero result and a partial bet refund.

Facts and Features of Asian Handicap Betting

  • The draw is eliminated from the possible outcomes.
  • Bettors can only bet on the home team to win or the away team to win.
  • The weaker of the two teams is given an advantage by handicapping the stronger team.
  • The bettor can win his stake even when his chosen team draws or loses the match.
  • The bettor will get more frequent returns from his bets.
  • The value of handicap allocated to the favourite team depends on how much stronger that team is which is indicated in the odds offered for the team to win.
  • The bettor can choose to back the favourite despite the handicap, anticipating that the team will overcome the handicap and win anyway.
  • The bettor can opt to back the ‘underdog’ in the hope that when the handicap placed on the favourites is added on to the final result the goal total will be enough for the punter to win the bet even if the underdog loses the match overall.
  • When fractions of a goal are used to handicap a team, it eliminates the possibility of a ‘push’ which is a draw as no football team can score a fraction of goal. When whole values are used as a handicap, it can result in a push and the stake would be refunded to the customer as the draw outcome doesn’t exist in AH betting.
  • When you win an AH bet your stake is multiplied by the odds and credited to your account.
  • LIVE Asian handicap betting allows the punter to bet on goals still to be scored in the remaining minutes in a match and does not include goals scored in the match up to the moment of the bet.
