Origins and Evolution of Baseball

Baseball has been played around the world in a simplified form with a piece of wood serving as a bat and a spherical object as a ball for what could be thousands of years. The first published rules of baseball were established by the ‘father of baseball’ Alexander Cartwright in 1845 for a base ball club called the ‘Knickerbockers’ in New York and these have evolved into the rules applied today.

The National Association of Base Ball players was established in 1857 with around 25 clubs from the New York City area coming together to play in front of large crowds of up to 4,000 people. By 1862, the sport was sufficiently popular to fence off ball parks and charge admission fees to the public. The sport had a ‘bumpy ride’ up until the 1920’s were the popularity of sport grew enormously. The game took off after the 2nd World War in a big way with the black player Jackie Robinson breaking the ‘colour barrier’ which plagued society and sports in the USA.

During the 1950’s and 1960’s the American League or AL and the National League expanded rapidly building stadiums and in the 1970’s and 1980’s adding artificial turf. The AL and the NL came together in the year 2000 forming the MLB which is led by the Commissioner for Baseball. The 30 professional teams play 162 games in each season with the 5 teams from the AL and 5 teams from the NL competing in the MLB post season elimination tournaments. These begin with a Wild Card game followed by Division Series for each league.

The next stage in the MLB Post Season competition is the League Championship Series where the winners of the AL league Championship Series face the winners of the NL League Championship Series in a fabulously exciting ‘best of seven’ World Series. The winners of the World Series are rewarded with the magnificent ‘Commissioner’s Trophy’ which is the only major sporting trophy in the USA which is not named after a named individual.

Baseball outside the USA

Baseball is a popular sport in many parts of the world including Japan and Latin America. The International Baseball Federation was set up in 1938 and has worked hard through the years to organize challenging international tournaments for national leagues. The first Baseball World cup was staged in London in 1938 with Britain winning the cup beating the USA 4 games to one. Professional players could not participate in the World Cup until 1996 and even after that, most professional teams don’t participate as it clashes with the official ‘season’ for professional clubs. The sport is very popular in South America and the Caribbean with the ‘Caribbean World Series’the most important annual baseball event in Latin America. A recent addition to the event calendar was made in 2006 and is played every 4 years as the ‘World Baseball Classic’ where teams from all over the world come together to play in the tournament organized by the MLB and the MLBPA.

The bookmakers that we have chosen to partner with cover the international tournaments as well as those held within the USA making baseball betting a comprehensive and exciting sport betting option.
